Warning! This is intended only for youngsters, fresh from their studies in search of an opening. Seniors and middle aged please excuse – I will come up later separately for you!
Employers all over the world follow only one concept invariably while recruiting, which is “right man for the right job at the right time”. They spend money for advertising vacancies only when there is a dire need for recruitment. The ultimate object of every commercial organization is to make profits and they will never throw away their money just like that for fun. You must please understand this bottom-line.
First you must think deeply and make a thorough self-analysis as what you want to become. Based on your qualification, physical fitness, mental attitude and knowledge you can consciously find out, which job will be very much suitable for you. Then concentrate only on this and always keep on thinking about it until you are very clear about which job you are going to apply for. Instead of shooting out applications to multi-various employers and getting frustrated, you can sharpen your focus to only the line of employment most suitable to you and be selective in applying.
Then comes grazing the job advertisements. (Let me share a secret with you- the clue for feeling the pulse of the employer is inherent in the words of the advertisement you are reading. Every word of it is either composed or approved by a brain sitting at the recruiting table.) So if you keenly watch the words, even if needed repeatedly, you will learn a lot about the urgency; quality policy; expectations of the management; mind-set of the employer; treatment that can be expected by you in future and so on.
After careful reading as above, think and analyze whether it is worth for you to apply to this job, whether it suits your expectations, chances of being selected, how much suitable you are to fit into their requirements squarely and so on. Don’t waste your time and theirs, if it is not.
Then try to make some research about your prospective employer if the name and address of the employer is expressed in the advertisement (otherwise don’t bother). You can collect the details of line of activity, reputation and popularity of the organization, so that you can use it either in your application or at the time of interview.
Then comes the most important part of preparing your application. You should know that till the application leaves your hand, you have all the time in the world to perfect it in every way possible, meticulously. As if it is your only door to open up your entire future, you should carefully prune the same and concentrate on every aspect of it – full details; arrangement of short crisp words; attractive display and above all earnestness to secure the attention of the ultimate reader. (Another inside secret here – from the time it reaches the organization till it is put up to the deciding authority, there are many a slips from the cup and the lip. First, along with hundreds of application covers yours is also opened by somebody, then segregated by some one else and then classified into a tabulated form by the immediate assistant of the selector. So your application should pass through each of these and care is needed in selecting the right cover, typing neatly and legibly and focusing precisely your particulars without mistakes of any nature - some buddies are omitting to sign the application in their hurry - for easy and comfortable reading.) If you are applying online through internet, then also all the above cautions apply, excepting paper work. Unless your application is not perfect to catch the attention of the reader, chances are plenty for its being tossed into the dust bin if it is on paper or clicked to the trash if it is online.
When the selector peruses your application, the first thing that attracts is the execution; next the precise details (underscores wherever needed for easy reading); arrangement and order of the details; completeness of the furnished particulars without omission and so on. (Here is another secret: while perusing your application, the selector’s mind works fast weighing the suitability of this candidate for preliminary selection; comparing the applicant with other such applicants; the advantages for the organization if at all a chance is given to this candidate and more. So it is only here that the fate of your application is decided. Be careful to mention what is so special about you when there are hundreds like you with the same qualifications and age. Your attitude only counts here. Your willingness to learn, your sincerity in carrying out the assignments entrusted to you and how the organization is going to be benefited to have a loyal employee – are all should be expressed without fail – mind you, no bogus assurances that you will bring the moon or false promises are tendered – only what a fresher can do honestly and sincerely – that is enough.)
After submitting the application with care on the above lines, you can very well expect a call back from the employer for an interview or further details and you must be mentally ready to face it. A phone call intended for you may come in your absence and make sure that it is replied properly and the message passed on to you in time for your reviving the contact. When you get an invitation for interview, you have crossed only half of the well and you will tumble into the well if you do not handle the interview with care and caution. Get ready with all the proof of your personal details, take sufficient copies, file them neatly in a separate folder to be handed over to the interviewer if asked and don’t forget to take along the originals also. (One such goody came to me empty handed at the time of interview and said he had already furnished all the details in the application – no wonder I drove him out politely!)
Facing the personal interview is an important thing and lots of guidance is already there available. Suffice it to say that the interview is an opportunity to get to know each other – the employer and the prospective employee – and this should be used to the best advantage. Always have this objective in mind when answering the questions – they are not here to grill you, but they seek all the information about you so that they can evaluate your suitability for the vacancy and how you would flourish in future once you are appointed. (One more final secret – the interviewer will be much happier if you are found suitable, because he will get a pat on the back for the right selection!)
Be bold (this interview is only a beginning and not the end of the world), confident (after all, others competing with you are also sailing in the same boat but you have an edge over them due to your preparedness), be clear, unambiguous and in a friendly submissive tone when answering their questions politely and be honest if you don’t know certain things. They are not expecting you to be a superman! Don’t be evasive or pretend to be super-duper if you do not know, lest you will have two disadvantages – one: you lose a chance to learn and two: your reputation hits the bottom when they find out your lie. OK? Then what – you will be immediately selected and enjoy life happily!
